The Sherborne Literary Society was formed early in 2012 and is open to everyone.
The aims are to bring together national and local writers to discuss their work. Provide a forum for the area’s own aspiring writers. Create an interest in books amongst young audiences. Raise the culture of reading. Demonstrate the fun and creativity associated with the written word. Run an annual Literary Festival for Sherborne and the surrounding area
The Pack Monday Fair was originally called the Michaelmas Fair and takes place on the first Monday after old Michaelmas Day (October 10th). Tradition states that Abbot Peter Ramsam and his workmen completed the nave of the abbey and kept a holiday on that day in 1490. The name Pack Monday was derived from the men packing up their tools. This prestigious charity event, taking place on Sunday 21st July, is now in its 16th year and regarded as one of the premier classic and supercar shows in the South of England. More than 2,000 vehicles will be exhibited including vintage, classic, rally, race, supercars, American, custom and hot rods. There will be over 150 trade, craft and Autojumble stands plus a Charterhouse car auction, live music in the catering village, amusements for children and beautiful picnic places
The Sherborne Castle Country Fair presents a rich and fun programme of events, country activities, stands and entertainment including one of the largest Rare Breed Shows in the country. For one day each year, one of the finest settings, with its spectacular grounds and lake surrounding Sherborne Castle, is transformed into a fun-packed Country Fair with attractions, entertainment and activities for all the family. The nineteenth annual award-winning Sherborne Abbey Festival took place on a sunny May bank holiday weekend as thousands flocked to twenty five different concerts in the town, around seventy percent of which were free-entry. The 20th annual festival takes place on 3-7th May 2019.
Sherborne’s Festive Shopping Day is always well supported as the town puts on a whole host of different musical, fun and entertaining activities. The main shopping area of Cheap Street is closed to traffic allowing for street performers, choirs, bands, orchestras, carollers, dancers and more. The Abbey Church welcomes visitors to join in its joyful Shoppers’ Carol Services, held at 1.30pm, 2.30pm & 3.30pm, and to wonder at its magnificent ceiling-high Christmas tree and traditional crib scene. The Cheap Street Church stages its ever-popular Christmas Tree Festival too, featuring dozens of twinkling trees, all delightfully and individually decorated.
